Through the course of successive braces adjustments, Dr. Joseph Basile has been able to fully correct the alignment of your teeth. However, the tension applied to your teeth during these adjustments might still linger in the periodontal ligaments anchoring each tooth in its socket. If it isn’t addressed in some manner, it could cause your teeth to gradually relapse out of their new position.

To prevent this from happening, Dr. Joseph Basile will provide you with a retainer. This is often a removable mouth piece that needs to be worn in your mouth during the prescribed times. If there was one area of your teeth that required significant correction Dr. Joseph Basile might recommend installing a fixed retainer. This is a strong metal band adjusted to the shape of your lower teeth. It will be cemented in place with a strong dental adhesive to hold the teeth in their correct position.

A Hawley retainer is designed to conform to the shape of your mouth. It typically includes special interlocking wires that correspond to specific teeth. This will help hold your upper teeth in their ideal position while the tension in your periodontal ligaments fades.

The retainer will need to be cleaned and maintained every day. This involves lightly rinsing and brushing all the retainer’s surfaces. When you aren’t wearing it the retainer should be kept in the case provided.
